The Double Cleanse

Double cleansing for makeup removal/skin cleansing is a pretty popular concept. In fact, I think I was probably doing this technique before I even know it had a name. First it was makeup wipe + cleanser, then cleansing balm + cleanser and now…well, I’m so happy to share the latest and greatest clean combo.

I can’t take full credit for this find, I had a phone conversation with a Follain Dallas associate about which cleansing balm would be best for me. She mentioned a few, based on my skin type and needs, and then offered to send me some samples. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it’s always a good idea to talk to product experts, be it in store, over email or online chat. Looking at a full selection of cleansers can be overwhelming, and utilizing these resources can really help to narrow your best options down. Oh and always ask for samples, unless you truly don’t use them, why not?! I love to leverage them for travel once I’ve made a decision and most vendors are more than happy to make you up some.

My Follain cleanser samples – complete with handwritten instructions! And she threw in some eye serum samples too πŸ™‚

Ok, so now you know how I made my decision, but what did I pick? I actually enjoyed both the Naturopathica Manuka Honey Cleansing Balm and the One Love Organics Vitamin B Cleansing Oil & Makeup Remover. I went with the One Love Cleansing Oil because as much as I enjoy the hydration of a cleansing balm, for me it requires a second cleanse. The One Love Cleansing Oil is lightweight enough to function as a makeup remover and cleanser all in one, so on days I’m feeling especially dry or lazy (:P ), I can get away with just this step.

Most days, I follow this up with my tried and true cleanser, the First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser. This is a very gentle cleanser that never leaves my skin feeling dry or stripped. I’m pretty well-stocked on this product, so I’ll be happily using this for a while to come.

The Process

Nine times out of ten, I’m wearing makeup, so my first step is always makeup removal. I apply one pump of the One Love Cleansing Oil to my dry face. I work the oil into my skin, especially around my eyes/lashes. Once I look like a scary, melted makeup monster πŸ˜› , I go in with warm water and rinse the oil off. If I wore a lot of eye makeup or waterproof eye makeup that is still lingering, I go in with a second pump and concentrate that on the eye area. This oil is so gentle, I’ve never felt any irritation or stinging. I go through this process with my contact lenses in. I may experience some momentary blurriness if any oil gets into my eyes, but a couple of blinks and I’m back to normal (as compared to most cleansing balms where I had to remove the contaminated contacts all together).

Once all traces of makeup are gone (or mostly gone), I go in with a tiny dollop of the First Aid Beauty Cleanser on my still wet face. I apply it all over and rub it in with the PMD Clean facial cleansing device. I set the device to Mode 2 and gently move the brush head around my face in circular motions, concentrating on and around my nose, forehead and chin (areas where I have the most visible pores/blackheads). I typically use the PMD for 2-3 minutes, rinse my face (and the device) with warm water and start on my nighttime skincare routine.

Unlike other brush cleanser devices, the PMD Clean is a silicone, one piece system that is naturally bacteria resistant and very easy to maintain. I’ve had mine for the better part of a year and it still looks brand new. I very much prefer this to the Clarisonic-style brushes that require frequent brush head replacement and could potentially create micro tears in your skin. The silicone bristles are soft and its more the actual vibration that benefits your skin.

Here I am, post-skincare routine with no makeup

And, that’s it! My skin is clean and prepped for my nighttime routine. Sometimes with using cleansing balms, I would long for the lazy ease of makeup wipes. The One Love Cleansing Oil takes has completely removed my desire for wipes and I count that as a major win! Not only for my skin and pocket, but for the environment as well. What are your makeup removal/cleansing must-haves? Have you tried any other facial devices that I should look into? Let me know!!

Cheers!
